JD’s JoyAI and JoyInside Are a Smarter Bet Than Building Humanoid Robots (1 of 2) (Tech Strategy)

I was at the World Robot Conference in Beijing (Aug 19-23), which was awesome. I’ll be writing a lot about that.

And I expected to see a JD exhibit there, mostly focused on their logistics robots.

But I was surprised to discover that JD had one of the largest exhibits at the conference. It was a 600-square-metre space, and JD was the conference’s global strategic partner.

JD Had One of the Biggest Booths at the World Robot Conference

I have been underestimating JD’s push into robotics and embodied AI. They are way more active that I was aware of.

JD Is Doing Four Things in Robotics and Embodied Intelligence

JD is:

  1. Becoming a big retailer for robots and all sorts of products with increasing intelligence and autonomy.
    • That makes sense. JD has long been a powerhouse in electronics, consumer appliances and laptop / mobiles. So, their core category is basically increasing as everything gets smarter and autonomous.
    • They are working with robotics and other smart product companies to market, distribute and educate about their products.
  2. Providing embodied intelligence to hardware companies.
    • JD wants to be the “go to” partner for all the traditional hardware and products companies that want to make their products intelligent and autonomous.
    • That’s JoyInside, which I’ll go into detail on.
  3. Creating foundation models that enable all this.
    • That’s JoyAI. More on that in Part 2.
  4. Creating and deploying logistics robots and drones.
    • That’s JD Logistics. I won’t go too much into that.

Most of JD’s massive exhibit at the conference was about the first. They want to be the retailer of choice for a world of smart and autonomous products.

JD Is Becoming the Retailer for Robots

They have lots of products you can buy. And lots of brands. I won’t go into this. But here are some fun photos.

Ok. Let’s move on to the second topic. How are they making products smart and autonomous?

JoyAI Is the Brain. JoyInside Puts It in the Product.

This is what I really want to talk about.

  • JoyAI is JD’s foundational “cloud brain”. These are their models, mostly for language, vision, spatial reasoning, and real-time voice models.
  • JoyInside is JD’s deployment framework that embeds those underlying models into physical hardware. Like robots. But also, for cute toys and other products.

JoyInside Is About Serving Manufacturers and Product-Makers

JD has long-standing relationships with both Chinese and international merchants and brands. And especially those in the 3Cs.

  • Computer: Personal computers, laptops, tablets, and related peripherals or components.
  • Communication: Smartphones, mobile devices, and networking equipment.
  • Consumer Electronics: Digital cameras, audio equipment, wearables, and other personal electronic devices (often distinct from large home appliances).

So, they understand the problems of these types of manufacturers. Such as their needs in marketing, education, distribution, financing and logistics. And JD offers solutions to all those.

The new problem for many businesses is: How can I make my products smart and autonomous? Whether it is a vacuum, a toy or a refrigerator.

This is a challenging problem for them:

  • Embodied intelligence means putting in robotic components (sensors, cameras, actuators, batteries, etc.).
  • It means putting limited brainpower on-robot, which means GPUs and CPUs with tight feedback loops between sensors and actuators.
  • It also means doing massive sensory processing, spatial awareness and higher intelligence. Most of which happens off robot.
  • It means giving customers tools for both programming and controlling such products.

JoyInside is basically JD’s solution to all these challenges.

Here are some JoyInside products.

This last one is a Bochu AI Cooking Machine and a Hicon Smart Appliance.

JD showcased these appliances as part of its JoyInside smart home and kitchen automation platform, where JoyAI handles recipe generation, parameter control, and natural language voice commands.

Another good one is JD’s J.Zao Robot Dog.

What Hardware Makers Actually Get from JD

To turn a traditional OEM into a “smart hardware” partner, JD provides a four-tier commercial and technical enablement package through its JoyInside 2.0 / JoyAgent platform.

1: JD Provides the AI Models

At the top level sits JoyAI (LLMs, JoyAI-Talker for voice, JoyAI-VL for vision, and JoyAI-RA for robotics). JoyInside acts as the runtime layer that connects these models to hardware.

This includes:

  • Real-time API and Inference Access: This is access to the cloud-hosted JoyAI foundation suite. I’ll go into this in detail in Part 2.
  • JoyAgent Orchestration Engine: This is JD’s open-source and enterprise middleware framework (JoyAgent) that lets partners build natural language workflows without writing manual command code.
  • Continuous Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates: Ongoing model fine-tuning, voice feature upgrades, and security patches pushed down to the manufacturer’s devices.

2. JD Provides the Developer Tools

JD provides software toolkits (SDKs and APIs) to external hardware makers.

This allows third-party manufacturers to integrate voice control, computer vision, and context reasoning into their microcontrollers without building their own AI backends.

These are lightweight software development kits compiled for low-cost microcontrollers, ARM chips, and robotics edge boards. This handles edge-to-cloud data streaming, audio processing, and device security out of the box.

3. JD Provides the Supply Chain

Because JD operates a massive B2B industrial procurement and supply chain business, it provides hardware partners with hardware development support:

  • Reference Hardware Designs: Pre-validated hardware blueprints, board designs, and component lists for adding AI capabilities (mics, cameras, edge processors) to legacy appliances.
  • Upstream Supplier Matching: Connecting small robotics startups or toy makers with qualified contract manufacturers, sensor vendors, and chip suppliers.
  • Joint Hardware Co-Development: For strategic partners, JD co-engineers proprietary hardware concepts.

Rather than making all the physical hardware itself, JD licenses JoyInside to third-party brands across several hardware categories:

  • Robotics and AI Toys: Unitree (bipedal/quadruped robots), Fuzozo, and educational toy makers.
  • Smart Appliances: Washing machines, refrigerators, and kitchen cookers.
  • Health and Home Devices: Smart mattresses and eldercare equipment like connected wheelchairs.

4. JD Provides Distribution and Go-to-Market Acceleration (on JD.com)

This is where JD’s huge online retail footprint comes into play.

For many hardware OEMs, the main reason to join JoyInside is the commercial pipeline. They get:

  • The “JoyInside / AI Storefront”: JD uses its main e-commerce platform as the primary sales channel for these products.
  • Channel Placement and Co-Branding: Devices certified with JoyInside receive “JoyInside Ecosystem” branding and featured placement across JD’s online retail platform.
  • Cross-Device Interoperability: A partner’s appliance automatically gains access to the entire 200+ brand JoyInside ecosystem, meaning their device can immediately trigger or respond to other smart appliances in a home without negotiating individual software partnerships.
  • E-commerce Marketing and Live-Commerce: Access to JD’s automated digital human avatars to run 24/7 automated sales and product demonstrations directly on the seller’s product pages. JoyStreamer is JD’s digital human livestreaming system, used by over 70,000 merchants across JD.

Ok. I like all of that. That’s a good pitch to hardware makers.

JD Is Offering Brain, Supply Chain and Storefront in One Package

Hardware OEMs get:

  • The AI brain and developer kit (models, SDKs, middleware).
  • Component supply chain support to actually manufacture it.
  • Distribution on JD.com (backed by AI-driven marketing) to sell it.

So how does this relate to JoyAI? That’s what I’ll cover in Part 2.
