From Underwater Sonar to Paper-Feel Tablets: Here’s Huawei’s Coolest New Consumer Tech (3 of 3) (Tech Strategy)

In Part 1 and Part 2, I went through Huawei’s new Runner GT 2 watch. Which is pretty cool. And I argued it was a good example of Huawei’s consumer products strategy, which I described as “breakthrough tech” plus “emotional resonance”. And really, as a massive engineering firm, it’s the breakthrough tech that is the most interesting.

So, in this last part, I want to quickly go through the breakthrough tech in the other consumer products they just announced. Which are the:

  • Huawei Watch Ultimate 2
  • Huawei Mate80 Pro
  • Huawei MatePad Mini
  • Huawei FreeBuds Pro 5

The Watch Ultimate 2 Upgraded its Golf Technology

This is Huawei’s flagship luxury adventure smartwatch, released in late 2025 as a direct competitor to the Apple Watch Ultra and Garmin Fenix series. It’s a bit of a hybrid. It has the high-end material craftsmanship of a luxury timepiece. But it’s also a high-end tool for extreme enthusiasts, particularly divers and explorers. Here is what it looks like (in green).

And it is pretty awesome, with all sorts of crazy tech.

  • For diving, it can do underwater sonar-based communication. Divers can send preset text messages (up to 50 types) to other Watch Ultimate 2 users without any external accessories.
  • It is also certified for diving down to 150 meters (EN 13319 and ISO 22810). The Apple Watch Ultra is rated for 40 meters of recreational diving.
  • For pro-level expeditions, the upgraded Sunflower antenna system uses AI to adjust signal reception based on your wrist position. And the display hits a blinding 3,500 nits, making it arguably the most legible screen in the world under direct desert sunlight.

But the big tech upgrade this year is for golfers. It offers them 4 new features:

  • Swing data analysis. The watch sensors measure the speed and angle of your swing from the movements of your wrist. See images below.
  • Club specific statistics. You tell it what club you are using and it gets you swing analysis specific to that club.
  • Custom flag position. The watch has, of course, all the course and green maps. But these are static. Custom flag position lets golfers interact with the course map in real-time. Instead of relying on a static center-of-the-green distance, the Custom Flag Position allows you to match its actual location on the physical green for that day.
  • Score history on bezel. This gives golfers a high-speed visual summary of their performance without needing to scroll through digital menus.

Here is info on these upgrades.

And here’s the summary for the Ultimate 2. It’s awesome.

The Mate80 Pro Has “True-to-Color” Photography

This is one of Huawei’s premium smartphones. And it has got lots of high-end specs with lots of upgrades. Including design, screen, weight, durability, heat dissipation, processor speed, battery life, two-way noise cancellation, and others.

But the breakthrough tech this year is its “true to color” photography. This camera system is the centerpiece of its XMAGE imaging system. It is designed to move away from the over-processed or beautified look common in smartphones, focusing instead on clinical color accuracy and realistic light rendering.

One of the ways it does this with a fourth sensor dedicated for color data. In addition to three cameras / sensors on the back (40MP Ultra-Wide, 48MP Macro Telephoto, 50MP Main (Ultra Lighting)), it also has an advanced light meter for all the cameras.

It has some other technical tricks, but the goal is to create true life colors in images. Here is the information.

The MatePad Mini Recreates the Feel of Paper

I really like this one.

This is Huawei’s new small tablet. It’s only 8.8 inches so you can hold it in one hand. And it’s super light (255gm) and thin (5.1mm). But the cool tech is the PaperMatte screen and pen.

It’s got an OLED display so it looks great (very good for watching videos).

But when writing with the pen, it feels just like writing on paper. That’s the PaperMatte tech. It’s a specialized screen technology designed to make the digital display feel and look like physical paper. When used with the M-Pencil Pro, the PaperMatte surface provides a slight amount of resistance. That’s why it feels like “Pen-on-Paper” instead of the “plastic-on-glass” sliding feel of most tablets. This slight friction really provides better control for handwriting and sketching.

It’s also got anti-glare and no reflections. Because paper doesn’t reflect light.

Here’s the basic information.

The FreeBuds Pro 5 Pioneers Dual-Driver Noise-Canceling Architecture

Audio is one of Huawei’s big international consumer categories. And this is their new Pro model for in-ear earbuds. Upgrades for earbuds is usually about making them lighter and more comfortable. Which these are.

But the breakthrough tech here is the noise cancellation system (ANC) with a dual-driver architecture. Instead of having one little speaker creating a sound wave to cancel outside noise, this has two. It has a woofer that focuses exclusively on canceling low-frequency rumbles (like airplane engines). And it has a micro-planar tweeter that targets high-frequency noise (like people talking or glass clinking). Basically, a punchy base sound driver and a high treble.

These two separate drivers also give the listener a wider range for music and such. But most high-end earbuds have two drivers for listening. This is the only one that has two for noise cancellation.

It looks like this.

Here’s the summary.

***

That’s it.

It was a pretty interesting event. Lots of new tech to learn about. Plus, some good strategy stuff. Here’s a summary of the event and the products if you’re curious.

Cheers, Jeff
