Jonathan Woetzel of McKinsey: Reality vs Fantasy in Chinese Secular Trends

Nearly everyone talks about China in terms of large secular trends – GDP growth, consumer spending, etc. - but Jonathan Woetzel has been living and working in China for almost 20 years and has unique insight into the truth and fantasy of such trends.

Jonathan Woetzel is the “go to guy” for understanding China’s rapidly growing cities. A partner in McKinsey’s Shanghai office and co-chair of the Urban Institute, he has become the thought leader on urban development – and city life – in the world’s fastest growing economy.

While investors frequently speak of China in terms of its larger macro-trends (GDP growth, population, etc.) it is at the city and regional level where most of China’s development occurs – and where most of the important trends are playing out. We spoke with Jonathan about these trends – both real and imagined.
